It's playoff time!

So the NFL regular season comes to a close and my office pool is over. I finished with a 134-122 record against the spreads (52.34 %), which was good enough for sixth place (out of 23). Not my best showing in the world, but it’s better than randomly picking teams and I beat “The Sports Guy” Bill Simmons (125-123-6).

I need to brag about these things once in a while so I can feel good about my gambling habit. I’m still playing with house money (won from last year’s football season) so “habit” has not become a “problem”... yet.

Since we've ruled out the possibility that I may have a gambling problem, I might as well post my playoff picks for week 1.

NEW ENGLAND (-8) over Jacksonville
Florida team playing in New England??? I smell blow out. Right now there is a 32 degree difference between Jacksonville and Boston. Also, is there really any possible way that I would ever bet against Brady in the playoffs? I don't think so.

Washington (+2.5) over TAMPA BAY
Say what you want about Washington being too beat up, but are you willing to bet on Chris Simms in the playoffs? I didn't think so.

Carolina (+2.5) over NEW YORK GIANTS
Sure the Giants are 7-1 at home this year, but the playoffs are completely different. I have a feeling this will be a close one, but I think Carolina's defense will get the best of Manning in the end.

Pittsburg (-3) over CINCINNATI
This was the toughest pick for me. I really wanted to go with the Bangles on this one, but the Steelers have the playoff experience and a far superior defense. Cincinnati had a light schedule this year, which makes me think they are not as good as their record shows.

... there you go. Free money.

First of all, let me start by saying that I am not a writer, just an average NFL fan, and am not in the custom of writing about my feelings about football or any other sport for that matter. I am not a Steelers fan or a Seahawk fan. Superbowl XL is not over yet and I chomping at the bit to write something about the awful and unfair officiating during this game. I am alone at my house and do not know if other people feel this way but it is clear that the officials are favoring the Steelers in order for them to win. I do not drink so this is not the beer talking and I do not bet. I have seen at least five CLEAR instances where they have clearly and unfairly favored the Steelers and have definitely changed the outcome of the game. Fans will and should feel robbed. The NFL higher-ups should be ashamed of themselves and I really hope that sport writers do their jobs and write up a storm and not hide and stay away from the obvious. I do not think it is even necessary to point out the plays where the officials cheated all you need to do is watch the game. Even the announcers were scratching their heads and trying to find holding where there was none and pushing off where there was none. I don’t know but do you think if it was Matt Hasslebeck diving in for the touchdown; do you think the refs would have given him the touchdown? I do not remember any call going against the Steelers the whole game. At least none that altered the game result. Finally, all I can say is the Steelers could never have won the game without the officials handing them the game. These are the type of things that have been slowly but surely making me lose interest in the game and I am sure people out there feel the same way. Come on, what is the point of watching a game when the outcome has already been determined? There, I said it…now, what do you think?

I feel your pain. Trust me. I'm not a Steelers fan or a Seahawks fan either, but I still want to watch a fair game.

The Rothlisberger dive killed me. The ref didn't make the call right away. He had to run over to see where the ball landed, which was obviously not in the endzone. It may have crossed the line while in the air, but it was well short when on the ground. How could the ref have made this call?

Pitt probably would have scored on the next play anyway, but you can't know for sure. They may have gone for 3 instead.

I honestly don't know if they would have given Hasselbeck the touchdown if it were him instead of 'berger.
